Máximo González at Hospicio Cabañas
During the last twenty years, Máximo González achieved an important body of extaordinary work, original in its multiple forms – drawing, collage, installation, photography, video, performance, sculpture. Mainly centered in the most diverse and habitual objects, his work explores the relationship between popular culture and contemporary politics, and the topics of globalization, economic, social and cultural history.
The exhibition aims to reflect the multidisciplinary and singular character of this protean and prolific artistic practice which draws a path along the last twelve years. The exhibition develops in seven rooms, Patio Orozco and Patio Ciego. It’s conceived as an exploration journey of the corpus whose devices allow the visitor to measure the nature, the depth, the sense.
The exhibition opens with the work Demonstration (2002) made with money out of circulation. The works of the first room highlight some recurring aspects of Gonzalez’s focus, such as the motive for monetary devaluation, food and his thoughts about economy. The rest of the works which follow, place us in front of an imaginary and symbolic world, united by a real experience.
Inventive, hybrid, and sometimes subversive, playful and plurivocal, this body of work by Máximo González imposes by its distinctive authenticity and a great contemporary relevance.
